Black Twitter Rips Jessica Krug For 'Canceling' Herself After Pretending To Be Black

The author, who is actually white and Jewish, posed as Afro-Latina for years.

Author and professor Jessica Krug is now a viral news story after admitting she has been lying about her racial identity for years by posing as a Black woman.

In a Medium post published Thursday (September 3), Dr. Jessica A. Krug, who reveals herself to be a white Jewish woman from Kansas, admitted to living “a violent anti-Black lie, and I have lied in every breath I have taken.”

Krug admitted that, at various points, she claimed to be from North Africa, the U.S. and the Caribbean. She even landed a job as a professor of African studies at Georgetown University and was awarded more than one scholarship and fellowship meant for Black scholars.

She wrote books titled Fugitive Modernities: Politics and Identity Outside the State in Kisama, Angola, and the Americas, c. 1594-Present and Fathers of No Nation, which, according to her bio, “explores the relationship between seminal fugitive/resistance leaders and the gendered politics of authority and state in São Tomé, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica from the sixteenth century through the present.”

In the open letter, Krug also claimed she had mental health issues, “Mental health issues likely explain why I assumed a false identity initially, as a youth, and why I continued and developed it for so long; the mental health professionals from whom I have been so belatedly seeking help assure me that this is a common response to some of the severe trauma that marked my early childhood and teen years.”

She also said she was a “culture vulture” and that she should be canceled, “I should absolutely be cancelled. No. I don’t write in passive voice, ever, because I believe we must name power. So. You should absolutely cancel me, and I absolutely cancel myself.”
