You Will Not Believe Which Black Music Legend Got The Boot On ‘Masked Singer’
Following the Super Bowl season premiere of Fox’s The Masked Singer where Lil Wayne had been eliminated from the show, the Valentine’s Day-themed installment for the series’ third season came with another jaw-dropping reveal.
Four contestants disguised as Kangaroo, Miss Monster, Turtle and White Tiger faced off against one another to see who would move on to the finals. It would ultimately be Miss Monster who got the least amount of love from voters, thus making her the third contestant to be eliminated from the show.
While Lil Wayne’s unmasking left the judges stunned, Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger and R&B singer Robin Thicke were right on the money this time around in guessing who was the voice behind Miss Monster. Thus, the masked singer was revealed to be none other than legendary funk-jazz-disco icon Chaka Khan.
“I heard that iconic voice when you hit that verse. I said ‘That’s Chaka Khan,” Nick Cannon, who hosts the show, added.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly discussing her time on the show, the 10-time Grammy-winning songstress shared that she knew she was in a bind when viewers automatically recognized her voice. So, Chaka tried another tactic to keep them guessing, albeit most people still knew it was her.
“It was really much harder for me to do that than to just to go on and sing the songs,” she told the entertainment publication. “So I just sang songs that people would not expect me to sing, you know? That’s where the rub came in.” Overall, Chaka shared that she was just happy to experience the moment. “It wasn’t a competition for me, it was just something new and crazy to do,” she added.
It also might be the last time fans see Chaka do something like this for awhile who shared that while the experience was a memorable one, she’d much rather prefer “standing on stage and singing.” “I’ll stick to my comfort zone!” she said.
