The final edition of the decade-long Harry Potter film series is going out with a monstrous bang. The movie pulled in $476 million around the world this weekend, besting every major box office record. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 garnered $168.6 million in North America alone. That figure makes for the biggest opening weekend in history, not adjusting for inflation.

The previous record holder was The Dark Knight, which earned $158.4 million. Deathly Hallows: Part 2 also received new honors as the biggest one-day box-office earner, netting $92 million on Friday in North America. That figure includes the $43.5 million it made at the midnight screenings. The previous holder was 2009’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which grossed $72.7 million during that same period.

Analysts estimate that it cost about $200 million to make and $150 million to market the final Harry Potter film. Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com’s box office division, told the New York Times that the film’s “massive ticket buying frenzy” points to the end-of-an-era nature of the series. “It is nearly impossible to overstate the enormity,” he said.
