NYU Offering Course on Diddy
Sean "Diddy" Combs is having a pretty big week. First, he changed his name back to Puffy and now he's the latest music star to be the focus of a college course.
The Clive Davis Institute of Recording Music at New York University is offering the class "Topics: Sean Combs & Urban Culture." Jayson Jackson, former VP of Marketing and Promotion at Diddy's Bad Boy imprint, will teach the class, adding a first-hand perspective of the subject given his year's working with the entertainment mogul.
"No single personality dominated the landscape of urban mainstream popular culture in the 1990s (and since) more than producer, rapper and entrepreneur Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs," reads a description on the course. "By 2013, hip hop and black culture have become globally mainstream; the immense popularity that hip hop enjoys today is directly rooted in the profound cultural changes that Combs and his peers instigated."
The course aims to "investigate the social and cultural and political changes of the 1990s" and how the 44-year-old was "catapulted to success by those changes."
Diddy's story will be "discussed and dissected" through "critical reading" along with "viewings and listening assessments."
