Twitter Slams GMA For Saying Meghan Markle’s Engagement Offers ‘Hope’ To Black Women

Just...no.

Black Twitter came out in droves after news broke that actress and activist Meghan Markle was engaged to Prince Harry. The outpouring of support and congratulatory wishes for the soon-to-be First Duchess of Sussex apparently led many to believe that Markle was fulfilling a dream of many Black women — marrying into royalty. Good Morning America published a piece entitled, “For many black women, Meghan Markle’s engagement offers ‘hope’” to Black women, and boy did Twitter lose its mind.

The piece, penned by a Black journalist named Joi-Marie McKenzie, originally set out to chronicle “Black women’s excitement” over Markle’s impending nuptials. The post featured a slew of quotes from Black women from several prominent media outlets and dished on the significance of Markle’s engagement and even tackled her struggles with racial identity.

McKenzie, who denied having anything to do with the post’s headline, addressed the controversial post on Twitter.

Despite McKenzie’s clarification, many were offended by the piece’s title and the implication that Black women had no hope prior to the former Suits star’s engagement and continued to voicing their frustration online.

Now that we’ve heard both sides, this argument appears to be a draw. While it’s clear how the title could come across offensive, one quick glance at the actual post can shoot that notion down. Maybe the age old adage “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover,” should be changed to “you can’t judge a online piece by it’s title.”
