Coco Gauff Reveals How Perfectionism Affects Her Skills On The Court
Coco Gauff reveals how her childhood trait continues to set the tone for her life and career.
This tennis champion is currently on the cover of Vogue's April issue where sis looks like a goddess whose dripping in gold and melanin.
In the issue, Gauff reflects on her early days before fame and fortune. While she has defeated some of the league's biggest names, Gauff always pressures herself to be better each time she steps onto the court.
“I’ve always known I was a perfectionist…It’s not like I’m saying, ‘Good job, Coco.’ It’s like, ‘Okay, why didn’t you do that sooner?'” she explained to the outlet.
Before Coco started breaking records in the sports world, she was known to be hard on herself, even at a young age. While competing in her first-grade spelling bee, her mom, Candi, remembered how Coco reacted to misspelling a word.
"She was so fixated on the fact that she got one wrong,” she told the outlet. “To me, that was too much of an upsetting moment for her to have.”
In 2023, Gauff made history by winning the US Open against Aryana Sabalenka. That history-making victory marked Gauff as the first American teenager at 19 to win the title since Serena Williams in 1999.
Now, Gauff is on a new journey as she balances how to give herself constructive criticism.
“I’m trying to do more of, you know, accepting the good shots,” Gauff said, “and giving myself as much of a compliment as I do a critique.”
