Celebrated composer and editor Harry T. Burleigh is born.
Composer Harry T. Burleigh was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was the first African-American composer acclaimed for his concert songs and is credited with popularizing African-American spirituals. Burleigh was also an admired baritone, acclaimed editor and was a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
