Anthony Mackie is enjoying his time in the spotlight, especially with his new movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, now out in theaters. The actor, who graces Uptown's Home and Food issue, sat down with the magazine to talk about his career, not getting caught up in the hype and how he's your not typical good-looking guy.
"Average guy. If your car breaks down, I’m your guy," he says. "If you need a heartthrob, I’m not your guy. I’m dead serious."
When it comes to getting wrapped up in his own hype, Mackie says he learned his lesson and refuses to get caught again. "Everybody was like 'This is it, dog, you’re blowing up,' he says. "I bought into it thinking that my ‘Denzel time’ had come. I was left there with egg on my face."
Mackie also explained what it means to be a celebrity versus an actor and being clear on what road an artist wants to pursue.
"There’s a difference between being a working actor and being a celebrity.… If you’re in this field you have to ask yourself that in the beginning and be honest with yourself," Mackie says. "If you want to be a celebrity, go after that 100 percent. If you want to be a working actor, it may mean doing a play that no one sees, but you love the craft."
