This Day in Black History: March 1, 1990

Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation tour began on March 1, 1990.

Until this day, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation World Tour remains the most successful debut concert tour by any recording artist. It helped place Jackson, a member of the world-renowned Jackson family, as one of the top entertainers in the nation and beyond.
The tour, which began on March 1, 1990, was put together as a means of supporting Jackson’s fourth studio album, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, which was released in 1989. The tour also included music from her third album, Control.
The tour began in the United States and went on for nine months and was an international experience, with concerts in Canada, Japan, Germany, England, Brazil, the Netherlands and France. The tour was known for placing a great emphasis on theatrical effects and on choreography. It was often compared with the concert offering of Prince and her brother Michael Jackson.
With an attendance of more than two million concert goers and ticket sales grossing over $28 million in the United States alone, it was a singular achievement for Jackson.
