Solange Knowles Blooms in Prints for InStyle Magazine
Mixing prints isn’t for the faint of heart, but if anyone can illustrate how to work this trend with flair it’s Solange, whose knack for pulling off unconventional styles always leaves us inspired.
InStyle magazine features the fashion-forward musician in its February 2012 issue (“It’s All in the Mix,” page 193), but even more swoon-worthy than her plans to spoil her new niece Blue Ivy are the delicious prints she puts to work in the shoot. The newly-crowned Next model visually dares readers to take a risk with mixing and matching equally arresting color and print combinations styled by Haidee Findlay-Levin.
“Whether it’s eyelets, knits or florals, I always enjoy playing with texture and pattern. I like contrast,” Solange said, as demonstrated by the Dolce & Gabbana embroidered coat top and skirt she rocks in the story opener. And she shared another fashion obsession: “I’m naturally drawn to anything that looks tribal or African. For a good six months, all I wore were tailored African prints inspired by [Afrobeat pioneer] Fela Kuti.” Her go-to print choice comes to life by way of a Carven poplin dress paired with a Holst + Lee rope necklace and a floral-print turban paired with a floral top.
There are plenty of other looks to draw ideas from (and we love how she's rocking her natural hair in the whole shoot!), plus a bonus: Solo shares her perfect Valentine’s Day playlist. Get into it all and go pick up a copy of the magazine, on newsstands now!
