#GOAT: Simone Biles Breaks Record For World Medals Won By A Gymnast
We are running out of superlatives to describe what Simone Biles is doing in the sport of gymnastics. The Greatest Gymnast Of All Time is redefining her sport and hauling in gold medals at the same time.
Over the weekend at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Biles became the most decorated gymnast in world championship history. She surpassed Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo’s mark of 23 medals, and set the new all-time record at 25.
Biles won gold in the team title, and defended her titles in the all-around, floor exercise, vault, and won on the balance beam as well.
That’s five gold medals at this meet alone.
Biles is winning individual events by historical margins, even when she makes mistakes she’s still better than the competition. The degree of difficulty in her routines is unparalleled in the sport, and she continues to push the envelope.
This was likely Biles’ last world championships and she went out in style.
“I can’t be more thrilled with the performance that I put out at this world championships,” Biles told the Associated Press.
While she hasn’t officially confirmed this would be her last world’s it is believed that 2020 Tokyo will be her last Olympic Games. With her status firmly cemented as the greatest of all time, it would be surprising if Biles continues on past 2020.
But don’t count the diminutive sports giant out. Her performances over the past six years have taught us that much.
Still, she seemed to revel in the moment after completing her gold medal winning routine on the floor and blew kisses to the crowd.
“It’s just a good floor routine, farewell to just the end of this world championship chapter here in Stuttgart,” she said.
Of Biles’ record 25 world championship medals, 19 are gold.
