Black Spider-Man Goes Viral
Days after Donald Glover was announced as the new voice of Spider-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors, a young man named Nikolas A. Draper-Ivey has become an Internet sensation after posting photos of himself dressed as Miles Morales, the latest iteration of the Marvel superhero.
Draper-Ivey, a 22-year-old comic book artist from Michigan, put his own take on the character, which Marvel recently evolved into a half-Black, half-Hispanic teen. The diverse take on the classic hero was met with a hugely successful response from fans, and now seeing Draper-Ivey embody the hero has many calling for a young Black actor to take over the role in the big screen franchise. The young fan says he decided to dress as Spider-Man/Miles Morales after friends told him how much he looked like the character.
“Miles Morales seemed like the most appropriate one to do,” Draper-Ivey told BuzzFeed. “As I followed this character, being able to relate to him in a very real way brought this to life for me.” He adds, “I want to see Miles on the big screen. Even if I have to put on this suit and get up there with Andrew Garfield myself.”
He may have a chance. Draper-Ivey's Instagram photos even caught the attention of Sara Pichelli, the designer and co-creator of the character for Marvel. "You're perfect," Pichelli wrote on the young fan's feed.
Hopefully Draper-Ivey's viral pics will help Hollywood see that it's time for a Black Spider-Man.
