Halle Berry Shares Shocking Perimenopause Misdiagnosis
A doctor for Halle Berry completely missed the mark when mistaking the actress’ perimenopause symptoms for an STI.
Berry, who recently launched her women’s health community Respin Health, appeared on “The Drew Barrymore Show” on Monday, February 24, to discuss menopause and the mishap with her doctor. The issues began when Berry began dating her now-partner Van Hunt but struggled to go to the bathroom after they’d been “having the best time” intimately.
“I tried to go to the bathroom and I couldn’t go,” Berry said in the clip below. “It was so painful when I tried to let a little bit out. I couldn’t go. It took me almost 10 minutes just to empty my bladder because it was so painful.”
After Berry booked an examination due to her pain and noticeable swelling, the doctor diagnosed her with a “really bad case of herpes,” which tested her relationship with Hunt.
“We spend the next 72 hours doing the blame game, trying to figure out who gave it to me, who gave it to him,” Berry recalled. “And then a couple of hours after that, my doctor called me and said, ‘You do not have herpes.’”
The clinical error was a “defining moment for the Academy Award winner,” who decided to do her own research following the misdiagnosis, leading her to start Respin. “That’s when I came up with dry vagina syndrome that women have when they’re in perimenopause. And I had all the symptoms of what that felt like and I realized, ‘Oh, I’m 54 years old,’” Berry shared.
While appearing on TODAY last week, Berry embraced her aging and declared “nothing wrong” with being at the “mid-life” stage. “There’s nothing wrong with being 58, and you have to stop telling me there’s something wrong with me,” she said on the show. “And I’m going to prove to you that it’s not. And so women, we have to work together to destigmatize this time of life and change culture.”
