Licensing Request FAQs

Clip Licensing Frequently Asked Questions

We appreciate your interest in our footage. Below are a number of frequently asked questions regarding the licensing process.

Question: When do I need to purchase a license?

Answer: If you want to use clips from a program owned and created by the BET networks in a project which will be publicly shown or used for commercial gain, you must purchase a license.

Question: How do I submit a licensing request or ask questions about a specific clip or other BET owned property?

Answer: To submit a licensing request, fill out the BET Networks Licensing Request Form.  You may submit any questions you may have about the licensing process to BET Networks, and one of our analysts will get back to you.

Question:
What other material may be in BET footage requiring additional clearance?

Answer: If BET owns the rights to all the content in a program or property, we will be able to license clips to you with no further clearance being necessary. For certain programs and scenes, there may be additional third party clearances you will need to pay for or obtain, such as union or guild residual fees and separate license agreements for music used as background music or in performances.

Question: How are licensing fees determined?

Answer: Licensing fees for all requests are determined by the specific property, the license rights being requested and the timing of the clip you wish to use. An analyst will review your request, and may provide an estimate based upon these terms. An official fee will be finalized and adjusted once approval has been granted and your license is ready to be generated.

Question:
I want to extend the term, distribute the property over other media and otherwise modify or add rights to a license permitting me to use BET footage. Is this possible?

Answer: Yes – we can work with you to modify an existing agreement to cover almost any new direction you want to take your project! You can submit a new licensing agreement or you can reach out to the analyst you originally worked with. It’s that easy.

Question: I would like to purchase a copy of a BET program for my personal viewing and use. Would I order it through this process?

Answer: Requests for personal copies can not be accommodated, and are not available for purchase through the licensing process. If a BET program can be obtained for home entertainment purposes, it will be made available through a distributor or store. Instructions for purchase and ordering would be communicated through commercials or during the program.

**Using BET owned footage without permission is a violation of copyright law and could result in serious problems for you and your project, including law suits and other methods of legal action. In addition, there may be material within this footage requiring further clearance – you may become liable to other copyright owners and face repercussions from them, as well.
