Kendrick Lamar Leads 2016 Grammy Nominations With 11
Let’s face it, 2015 blew away 2014 when it comes to hip hop and most of that has to do with the albums released.
At the top of that albums list a lot of people have Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly including the Grammy Awards. The preeminent music award foundation released its annual list of nominations Monday (December 7) and K. Dot – along with his third solo studio LP – is all over it. He was nominated 11 times including potential honors for Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Rap Album.
Kendrick was just one of many stars in the world of hip hop and R&B to make the list. The Weeknd found himself on the list five times as his Beauty Behind the Madness will also compete for Album of the Year. D’Angelo, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, Big Sean, John Legend, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Miguel, Dr. Dre, J. Cole and Flying Lotus all made the list of nominations.
Country pop star Taylor Swift was the second-most nominated artist across all genres with seven nods. She and Kendrick teamed up for a remix of “Bad Blood,” which was nominated for both Pop/Duo Vocal Performance and Music Video.
This isn’t the first time Kendrick Lamar found himself all over the Grammy Award nominations list. He was nominated for and won awards last year for his single “i”, which would eventually find its way onto To Pimp a Butterfly. At the 2014 Grammy’s he racked up seven nods, however it was his loses that were most memorable as Macklemore infamously apologized to the Compton native for winning Best Rap Album through a text he regrettably shared with the public.
