Bobby Shmurda's Lawyer: We're Up Against the Rule of the Law
Bobby Shmurda is gearing up to make his next scheduled court appearance tomorrow (April 22). Before a decision is made on his fate, the rapper's attorney Kenneth Montgomery spoke with XXL about the case.
Montgomery touched on everything from his hopes for tomorrow's outcome to his client's current state. "I expect — like most of my cases, the thousands of cases that I’ve had — I expect the judge to have a decision based on a motion that I authored and gave the courts and the prosecutors to respond," he said. "And I expect the case to be put on some sort of track for discovery to make sure all the paperwork is turned over. I expect to give a hard drive [to obtain] outstanding videotapes and other discovery that the district attorney has, and I expect to get locked in to try to fight this case."
Ideally, Montgomery wants Shmurda's bail reduced, but it's not likely. "What I would want is some reasonableness to take place and that this young man can be given a reasonable bail and get out. But I know what we’re up against. We’re not up against reason. We’re up against the rule of law."
When asked directly if there's hope for Shmurda to catch a break on the $2 million bail amount, Montgomery responded, "Not before this judge. Absolutely not." However, he also mentioned that Shmurda has been keeping his head up behind bars. "He's a tough kid."
The 20-year-old Brooklyn native was arrested on Dec. 17, 2014, along with 14 members of his GS9 crew, on 69 charges, including various violent incidents, narcotics and weapons trafficking. Shmurda pleaded not guilty to all of the charges on Jan. 29, the first hearing after the initial arrest.
