The Five Most Dangerous Countries for Women

Congo and Somalia are on the list.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second most dangerous country in the world for women to live, according to a recently released expert poll by the Thompson Reuters Foundation. Somalia was ranked No. 5.

Others in the top five include:

No. 1: Afghanistan—for its poor health care, non-sexual violence and economic discrimination.

No. 2: Congo—It’s staggering rape levels (a recent report stated 48 women are raped each hour) is the main reason behind its high ranking.

No. 3:  Pakistan—For forced marriage, domestic violence and so-called honor killings.

No. 4: India—for high rate of child marriage, human trafficking and female infanticide.

No. 5: Somalia—For the high prevalence of girls who face female genital mutilation as well as low political representation of women in government.

Thompson Reuters Foundation’s TrustLaw legal news service asked 213 gender experts from around the world to rank the nations based the following six factors: health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, cultural or religious factors, human trafficking and lack of access to resources.
