Ten members of the First Congregational Society of Washington, D.C., resolved to establish a seminary for the training of African-American clergymen. The institution eventually grew to encompass colleges of liberal arts and medicine and, by 1867, became what is presently known as Howard University. Its founders envisioned the institution as an educational resource for the nearly four million newly emancipated slaves.
