Kerry Washington Reveals Theatrical Twist in Love Story with Nnamdi Asomugha
After a decade of marriage, Kerry Washington is opening up about the unique start to her relationship with pro football player Nnamdi Asomugha.
During an appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," the "Scandal" alum shared that their love story began at the Barrymore Theater, owned by Drew Barrymore's family.
"I was doing my Broadway debut. It’s such a storied, important theater," Washington highlighted. "It was my first time on Broadway, and now I write about it in my book, so it has another fun legend to fill all the beautiful things that have happened at that theater."
In 2009, Washington originated the role of Susan in David Mamet's “Race,” marking the start of her Broadway journey and the fateful meeting with Asomugha backstage.
Washington was asked about the nature of their connection, and she responded that she believes it’s “a little bit of both” — "first sight thing" and "slow burn." She said, “When you talk to people like my parents who have been married for as long as they have, I think both are important. I think that the first sight thing for me was really important and undeniable, but I think the slow burn is what keeps you going."
Known for keeping her personal life private, Washington initially kept details of their 2013 wedding under wraps. However, she has since revealed some unique aspects in her memoir, Thicker Than Water, like that her wedding vendors thought her wedding was a family reunion. The actress also revealed she used code names to maintain secrecy.
"We had some fun with code names, so Jason Wu made my wedding gown... He was secretly custom-making this wedding gown for me, but we used to say that it was for the Moroccan premiere of Scandal," Washington shared, shedding light on the creative measures taken to keep their special day a secret.
