He’s Back! Idris Elba Reprises ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Role With ‘Knuckles’ Spinoff Series
Sonic the Hedgehog fans are over the moon with the news that the popular character will return in a live-action Sonic spin-off series featuring Idris Elba’s character, Knuckles.
According to People, the Knuckles spin-off series has already been greenlit for a debut in 2023 only on Paramount+, while the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film will arrive in theaters on April 8.
The Sonic the Hedgehog film series is an extension of the video game franchise from Sega and follows the world’s speediest hedgehog as he finds his footing on his new home, Earth.
"We've got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them," said Haruki Satomi, Sega CEO, during the presentation, on Tuesday (Feb. 15). "... Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come."
Back in 2020, the first installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series was released in theaters and captured Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and his best friend Tom (voiced by James Marsden) defending the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (voiced by Jim Carrey). Mixed-ish actress Tika Sumpter also stars in the series voicing the character Maddie.
Sonic 2 will be directed by Jeff Fowler with Carrey and Schwartz returning to the screen. Fans will also hear the voices of Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore who have been cast in the sequel.
