[Watch] Why Did This Cop Punch a Woman When She Was in Handcuffs?
Officer Akinyemi Borisade, a 26-year-old one-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has been charged with simple battery after striking a woman who was already handcuffed. She was in custody for trespassing and resisting officers with violence. The incident was caught on camera, and has spurred outrage.
The attack, which occurred on April 27th took place when officers responded to a call about a dispute between a man and a woman at a local bar. The woman, who has been identified as 31-year-old Mayra Martinez, was fighting with her superior at the bar after quitting on her first day of work.
In the video, Martinez can be seen kicking at Borisade as he tries to restrain her. He then clearly loses control and punches her repeatedly before leaning her against a trash can. Martinez then crumples to the ground, visibly in pain.
Undersherrif Pat Ivey told News4Jax, "He [Borisade] could have turned her around and hel her in a transporting position that they are trained in back over to the location to wait by the door." "he could have stood there with her, but there was no need to strike her."
Borisade cannot appeal his dismissal from the force because he is a probationary officer, but if he successfully completes a name-clearing hearing with the department he could reapply as an officer with another department.
