Climate Activist Maya Penn Attended Met Gala in Custom Coach
Maya Penn–an environmental activist and entrepreneur–dazzled on the red carpet at last night's Met Gala in a custom Coachtopia look, styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson.
According to CNN, Coach said in a statement that Penn is an inspiring individual, who is redefining American fashion. She is one of the first to wear a custom look from the new circular Coachtopia brand which Penn collaborated on. The new Coach brand reuses materials that would otherwise go to a landfill.
Not only a natural lobbyist, business person, donor, movie producer, eco-planner, featured expert, craftsman, and artist, she is the Chief of her eco-accommodating style organization, Maya’s thoughts. She began the organization in 2008 when she was only eight years of age.
Maya’s Thoughts, is centered around making “craftsman created, embellishments and dresses produced using natural, reused, and classic materials,” according to the brand’s website site.
Penn is a native of Atlanta and is also a 3-time TED Speaker, artist, global activist, animator, filmmaker, social entrepreneur, coder and Simon & Schuster author.
Last year, Academy Award-winner Viola Davis signed on to executive produce Penn’s original animated short, “Asali: Power of the Pollinators.”
The action-adventure short film, which marks Penn’s directorial debut through her company Upenndo! Productions, features the 22-year-old’s own animation, according to Variety.
“’Asali’ made sense as our first major production because it integrates two of my biggest passions — animation and the environment,” Penn said in a statement. “My goal with Upenndo! is to dive into new worlds that reflect the interconnectedness of people and our planet, from a story-driven and action-packed perspective.”
