Pharrell Reveals A Song On N.E.R.D’s New Album Was Inspired By Police Brutality

N.E.R.D. premiered their forthcoming album at ComplexCon over the weekend.

N.E.R.D. treated fans to a live listening session of their forthcoming album, No_One Ever Really Dies, over the weekend at the star-studded ComplexCon.

During the  epic performance on Saturday night (Nov. 4), which included live choreography and a holographic stage designPharrell took a brief moment to suspend the music and explain the inspiration behind a track titled "Don't Don't Do It." According to the Virginia Beach trio's frontman, the song, which features Kendrick Lamar, is in fact a response to the senseless murder of motorist Keith Scott in Charolette, North Carolina.

While onstage, Pharrell explained the emotions he experienced while viewing the clip of Scott's death at the hands of police. In the video, Scott's wife can be heard pleading with authorities, "Don't, don't do it!" It was in her plea that Pharrell heard the makings of a tragic ballad.

"I thought to myself, 'She knows her husband is gonna die,'" Pharrell told the lively crowd. "And I knew in my mind, man, that's a chorus. The only thing that video is missing is melody and music."

While Pharrell alluded to the supergroup's album, their first project in seven years, being available everywhere for streaming relatively soon, an official date has yet to be released. N.E.R.D.'s epic performance at ComplexCon comes just two days after their Rihanna-assisted track "Lemon" set the internet ablaze.
