‘Black Panther’ One Year Later: Revisiting The Day #BlackExcellence Took Over The World
Exactly one year ago this weekend, Black Panther officially took over the world when the Ryan Coogler film, starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and many others hit theaters. The Marvel flick was a certified phenomenon, trending on social media for weeks and breaking box office records — once again proving no one should underestimate the power of the Black dollar.
Black Panther changed Black cinema — and Black people — in a fundamental way, so we had to celebrate the anniversary of the seminal film by revisiting the very first reactions of people around the world when they were introduced to the magic of Wakanda.
Wakanda forever!
From audience members dressing up to celebrity reactions, we really outdid ourselves in February of 2018, but how could we not be extra about the biggest movie moment of our generation? The world had never seen a Black superhero film of this caliber. With Boseman as T'Challa and the brilliance of Coogler behind the camera, many of us walked away feeling revitalized, inspired and ready to build our own Wakanda.
See some of the best social media had to offer from the weekend's opening-day screenings across the world.
