Airbnb Host Caught on Video Pushing Black Filmmaker Down Flight of Stairs
An Airbnb landlord in Amsterdam faces attempted murder charges after he was videotaped pushing an African tourist down a flight of stairs.
South African filmmaker Sibahle Steve Nkumbi and her friends were in Amsterdam to see an art exhibition. They knew they were late for their 11 a.m. checkout time and apologized to the landlord as they packed their belongings.
However, the angry landlord screamed “out” and became physically abusive to the group of South African tourists. Eventually, he pushed Nkumbi so hard that she lost her grip and went flying down the stairs.
Zanele Muholi recorded and shared the disturbing incident to Instagram
Sibahle Nkumbi gave a full interview about the abuse she encountered in Amsterdam
"The way he grabbed me, I knew he was going to throw me down there. I freaked out," she said in the interview.
"The last thing I remember was when I realised he was going to throw me down there," she added.
Nkumbi and her friends believe the push and abuse was racially motivated
The man was "verbally abusive by saying you people, you need to leave now, this is not Africa," Nkumbi said in the interview. "The connection of those words, any person of color who has witnessed racist attacks, you know it when it happens to you."
According to several news outlets, the man was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky told DailyMail.com that no one should ever be treated this way.
"Appalling and unconscionable behaviour against members of our community runs counter to everything Airbnb stands for," David King, an Airbnb official, told DailyMailOnline.
"We will take the strongest actions we can against such abhorrent conduct, including banning people for life from our platform and assisting law enforcement with their investigation and potential prosecution.
"Nobody should ever be treated like this and it will not be tolerated."
