Kanye West’s Childhood Home Found Trashed And Abandoned

It was purchased for charity a year ago.

Almost one year ago, it was announced that Kanye West’s childhood home on the Southside of Chicago would be turned into a community center in honor of his late mother Donda West’s passion for charity and philanthropy. But unfortunately, it seems that those philanthropic plans won’t get the chance to become a reality, at least not in the near future. According to reports, the Chicago home has been littered with trash and abandoned.

According to the Daily Mail, the residence, which was renamed the “Donda House,” is barely inhabitable. In photos obtained by the news site, the house is surrounded by garbage. On the exterior, the walls look like they’re crumbling and the windows are tattered. Inside, it seems as though the foundation is rotting and the ceiling is decaying from rain.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the home is believed to be serving as a safe haven for drug users, as drug needles and other tools were found around the building, according to Daily Mail.

The new photos look quite different from the ones Rhymefest previously posted on Instagram after announcing that he was going to head the new initiative. Rhymefest purchased the home in Nov. 2016. In a post on social media, he stated that the Donda House would be used as a “community arts incubator” to foster creativity in the arts.

Following the Daily Mail's initial story, Donda House, Inc. offered an official statement in a series of bullet points regarding the building's condition and initiative. The site indicated that it had employed both a landscaper and architect to help with the rebuilding. Additionally, the project will reportedly need financial backing. "We have a solid vision for the space, but now we need the dollars to back up that vision," Rhymefest added to the statement. "Hip-hop artists have been at the forefront of the fashion industry and the film industry, but it is now time that we participate in developing the communities that we come from."
