Luke Cage Season 2 Gets Release Date: 5 Reasons We Can’t Wait For June
In 2016 Netflix expanded its Marvel super hero universe with the premiere of Luke Cage. After setting up the storyline of the bulletproof bartender (played by Mike Colter) in Jessica Jones, a full 13-episode arc explored his strained relationship with his Harlem environs as he came to grips with his superhuman abilities.
After introducing Iron Fist the following year, fans got their next dose of Luke Cage in the highly anticipated Defenders series, where he was reunited with Jones, along with Iron Fist and Daredevil. After battling The Hand in the eight-episode series, Luke is finally back for his own season two on June 22, 2018.
Here are five reasons we can't wait for Luke Cage season two.
5. The music.
For season one, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge crafted the perfect score to this noir series, which was complemented by rib-crushing selections from Wu-Tang Clan and others. Given that each episode was named after a Gang Starr track, we can’t wait to see what Cheo Coker and his team have cooked up for this next go around.
4. Black Mariah/ Villains
In season one Luke Cage raised the bar for comic book villains on TV with the ruthless Cottonmouth Stokes, played expertly by Mahershala Ali. Sadly, the Basquiat-loving piano man came to his demise halfway through the season at the hands of his own cousin Mariah (played by Alfre Woodard), an ambitious Harlem politician who proved to be just as dangerous. While Luke barely survived his final fight with his brother, Diamondback, the door was left open for his return. Who will rise as Luke’s ultimate foe this season?
3. Reg E. Cathey
The late actor made many fans on Netflix as the BBQ master Freddy on House Of Cards. But before his untimely passing in February of 2018, it was confirmed by ShowRunner Cheo Coker that Cathey would be playing Luke’s father in season two.

2. Simone Missick/Misty Knight
All fans of the Luke Cage / Heroes For Hire comics have been waiting patiently to find out how and when Detective Misty Knight (played by Simone Missick) would be obtaining her bionic arm. The operation was teased at the end of Luke Cage season one when Knight’s arm was merely injured, but in The Defenders, her arm is severed by Bakuto, one of the five fingers of The Hand. As early photos show, Misty is armed and dangerous in season two and we can't wait to watch her lay the smack down.
1. Coffee
Ladies love Mike Colter’s steely portrayal of Luke Cage, and his chemistry with both Misty and Claire (played by Rosario Dawson) was undeniable. In between all of the head bashing and bullet deflecting, our hero made time to brew up special cups of “coffee” with the ladies. Luke and Claire’s relationship was not consummated in season one, but after being released from Seagate, they served up a table-shaking pot in their Defenders reunion, so we’re eager to see how much gets spilled in season two.
