Over the course of the year, Halle Berry has dropped out of a Garry Marshall movie, only to rejoin the cast. Then she announced her Broadway debut, only to later bow out and be replaced in that role. Now, for her next planned project, the Academy Award–winning actress will tackle a $100 million dollar film epic instead.

IndieWire.com reports that Berry is now set to star in the German film Cloud Atlas, along with Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon and Hugo Weaving. The movie will be directed by Andy and Jan Wachowski (The Matrix), and is adapted from a complex novel by David Mitchell.

Like the book, the film Cloud Atlas is expected to follow six storylines across time, including that of a bisexual musician in the 1930s, a female journalist in a thriller in 1970s California, an aging publisher in present-day London and a survivor of a post-apocalyptic world. Each of the starring ensemble cast will play multiple roles.

Berry’s last two films, Frankie and Alice and Things We Lost in the Fire, were poorly received at the box office, so hopefully the combo of having the opportunity to play different characters and the the cushion of the project's ensemble cast (she will not have to open a big-budget release solo) will further help her out of her current movie slump.

Cloud Atlas is set to begin shooting in September 2011.
