NBA Rookie Brandon Miller Named in Wrongful Death Lawsuit
The family of Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, a woman killed in a shooting on the Tuscaloosa strip close to the University of Alabama grounds, has initiated a wrongful death lawsuit targeting Charlotte Hornets rookie Brandon Miller.
The lawsuit. Harris’ mother Decarla Raietta Heard filed the lawsuit, which also names former Crimson Tide basketball player Darius Miles and Michael Davis, in the Northern District of Alabama’s Western Division.
Harris left behind a daughter who was 5 at the time of her death. Acting as the representative for her estate, Heard is seeking a jury trial and potential damages.
On Jan. 15, Harris and her boyfriend visited her cousin in Tuscaloosa when she was fatally shot in the early morning hours.
Miller, a former standout at Alabama and the second overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, “was not charged with a crime but a police investigator testified in February that he was at the scene and that the murder weapon was supplied to Miles and Davis from the back of his car,” USA Today reports. His lawyer denied Miller’s knowledge of the intent to use a weapon at the time.
“Miles, Davis and Miller knew or should have known that bringing a dangerous weapon to a dispute and discharging said weapon would likely result in harm to those around them," the lawsuit states.
The complaint also alleges that Harris suffered serious injuries resulting in her death, which were directly or indirectly caused by the negligence or recklessness of each of the defendants.
Miller inked a four-year, $49 million contract with the Hornets in July. He will earn $11 million in the first year of the deal.
Following the incident, Miller broke his silence during an Alabama practice: "I never lose sight of the fact that a family lost one of their loved ones that night," he said. "This whole situation is just really heartbreaking. Respectfully, that's all I'm going to be able to say on that."
