See How Janet Jackson Is Proving Being A Mom At 50 Is Possible

She's embracing her biggest role yet — and doing it all by her damn self!

After months of speculation, last May, Janet Jackson shocked the world when she announced she was embarking on a new journey — motherhood.

Despite varying opinions on giving birth at 50 years old, in medical terms considered a “geriatric pregnancy,” Ms. Jackson delivered a healthy baby boy, Eissa Al Mana, on January 3 of this year.

According to Parenting.com, births by women who were pregnant between the ages of 50 and 54 increased by more than 165 percent from 2000 to 2013 — a promising statistic for those who are opting to wait.

Despite a recent split from her estranged husband, Wissam Al Mana, Janet has snapped back while gearing up for tour and is taking motherhood in stride. She relocated back to Los Angeles after living in London and Dubai for five years.

Her older brother, Tito Jackson, 63, spoke highly of Janet’s maternal skills recently during a taping of ITV’s Loose Women — a U.K-based talk show. “'It's different seeing Janet as a mother, because Janet was always the type of person that usually played with the children usually for maybe five or 10 minutes,” he joked.

While not impossible naturally, most women who get pregnant at age 50 do so with the help of in vitro fertilization. And given that the average age for menopause is 51, older moms typically use donor eggs of younger women in order to conceive.

This makes a strong case for freezing your eggs if you are considering shelfing motherhood until your second (or third) chapter. Our favorite fictional character, Mary Jane, underwent the procedure in season 2, which sparked a conversation about the pros — and cons — of delaying children.
