Tyler Perry Tells Spike Lee to “Go Straight to Hell”

The filmmaker gets raw on the auteur.

Tyler Perry took off the gloves with Spike Lee. At a press conference for Madea’s Big Happy Family in Beverly Hills, Perry unleashed a tirade against the auteur when he thought a reporter—who was inquiring about the film’s marijuana use—was trying to ask about negative stereotypes in his films. Answering his harshest critics, Perry zeroed in on Lee.

“I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee,” Perry said. “Spike can go straight to hell! You can print that. I am sick of him talking about me, I am sick of him saying, ‘this is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him talking about black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘You vote by what you see,’ as if black people don’t know what they want to see.”

Remembering others who’d been criticized by Lee, Perry continued: “I am sick of him - he talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me, he talked about Clint Eastwood. Spike needs to shut the hell up!”

No word or response has come from Spike Lee. But in 2010, after criticizing Perry’s work during an interview with Ed Gordon on BET, he wrote on his 40 Acres Website, “Despite what has been written or said, I'm not feuding with Tyler Perry.”
