Beverly Johnson Recalls Lying to Land First Glamour Cover

The supermodel pretended she couldn't type and landed the cover gig.

Beverly Johnson might be most remembered for being the first African-American model to cover Vogue magazine back in 1974, but before that iconic moment. Johnson was a Glamour cover girl, a move she still credits for all the success that came afterwards.
"Everything that I know about fashion, travel, and culture is because of Glamour!" Johnson tells fellow model Arlenis Sosa for the magazine's 75th anniversary.
She also revealed the sneaky way she landed that cover in the first place.
"A friend who was convinced I should be a model got me an appointment at Glamour. They told me to take a typing test, but I acted like I couldn't even type. I had 20 words on the page. They said, why don't you go get something to eat, and when I got back, they offered me a 10-day modeling job. Can you imagine?"
After that moment, Johnson went on to appear on 15 Glamour covers and more than 500 other magazines. Not bad for a girl who fibbed about her typing skills.
