The new Black Lives Matter mural was visited by Civil Rights icon and Georgia Rep. John Lewis as he joined Washington mayor Muriel Bowser at the sight of the painting on Sunday (June 7). 

With their arms crossed in solidarity with the historical movement, Lewis and Bowser took iconic photos on what is now named “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” Bowser also shared the moment with her followers on Twitter posting, “We’ve walked this path before, and will continue marching on, hand in hand, elevating our voices, until justice and peace prevail,” she said. 

“Thank you for joining me at Black Lives Matter Plaza, in front of the White House.”

“It is very moving, very moving, very impressive. I think what the people in DC and around the nation are sending a mighty, powerful and strong message to the world that we will get there,” Lewis said to Fox 5-DC in his response to Saturday’s Black Lives Matter protests. 

“It was very moving to see hundreds of thousands of people from all over America and around the world take to the streets to speak up, to speak out, to get into what I call ‘good trouble,’ or to get in the way,” Lewis told Gayle King during CBS This Morning on June 4 speaking about the senseless death of George Floyd and the national public outcry that came afterwards. 

He continued, “It is my hope that we are on our way to greater change. To respect the dignity and the worth of every human being, and it doesn't matter the color or their background or whether they're male or female, gay or straight. We have come to a point, and said 'We are one people. We're one family.' We all live in the same house — not just American house, but the world house.”
