310babii on Overnight Success, TikTok Fame, and Staying True to His Hustle
At 18 years old, 310babii has already significantly impacted the music scene. His breakout single, "Soak City (Do It)," went platinum, gaining him national attention. In June 2023, the Inglewood native recorded the track using BandLab on his phone, freestyling the lyrics in under 20 minutes. That quick success led to a star-studded remix in September 2023 featuring Blueface, Tyga, Mustard, OhGeesy, and BlueBucksClan—all artists who contacted him on Instagram for the collaboration.
Reflecting on his quick rise, the recent high school graduate says, "It feels amazing being able to live your dreams at such a young age. I was expecting it to hit maybe in my 20s, but for it to be at 18, it’s crazy."
310babii also credits the COVID-19 pandemic for giving him the time to focus on music. That downtime allowed him to commit fully to recording and honing his craft. "Basketball kept me busy," he explains. "I was always rapping and trying to figure out how to record myself, but COVID gave me the time to commit." He recalls being in his room thinking, "This is what I want to do. It's right here. I don't have to wait for this. I don't have to go to school for this. It's right here."
TikTok also played a major role in his rise to fame. “TikTok helped me for sure,” he tells BET. “It’s part of how the industry is changing— Everybody was used to the standard artists or those we're familiar with, but now TikTok is allowing thousands of new artists to be discovered every day. I made a song off my iPhone, and without TikTok, it’s not the same song.” Though he recognizes some downsides, like the potential for overconsumption of content, he remains grateful for its impact. "Without TikTok, I wouldn’t be who I am. I don’t even think we'd be in this call right now without TikTok," he adds.
Since then, 310babii has dropped his second studio album, 310degrees, on October 3, with collaborations from Saweetie, Lakeyah, Money Man, and Luh Tyler. He explains the inspiration behind the album’s title: "My first project, nights and weekends, was me being in school, only able to work at night and on weekends. But then, with 310degrees, people get a little taste of what I can do with seven days a week.” He continues, “I am able to do my job every day of the week. There's no school. I'm in my bag; I'm working, working. I don't have to stuff six interviews into two days on the weekend, you know what I mean? I'm in the field now.”
He also admires Saweetie, his favorite female rapper right now, who appears on the remix of his 2024 hit “Rock Your Hips.”
“I like that she keeps going no matter what, and it reminds me of myself," he shares. "A lot of people doubt me. A lot of people say stuff and feel a certain way, and I always prove them wrong. People thought I was gonna only have one song—I made another. I made a couple more, and we have four songs right now on the radio.”
He further praised Saweetie’s accomplishments, pointing out that despite criticism, she continues to succeed. “Everybody always has something to say about Saweetie, but she’s still putting up a lot of numbers. She literally had her own McDonald’s meal, you know? She’s a legend,” he adds.
310babii, who recently received a nomination for the 2024 BET Hip Hop Award for Best Breakthrough Artist, expressed excitement about being recognized alongside some artists he admires. Despite being younger, he shares that he doesn’t feel pressured, believing this is his destiny. “To be on the same list as them and to be in these same rooms is inspiring. It’s a reminder to keep going. Anything is possible, no matter your age, what people say, or where you’re from,” he explains.
He adds that he's proud to represent West Coast artists and emphasizes that good music transcends regional boundaries. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from—if you have good music, you have good music. I don’t feel pressure at all. If it wasn’t meant for me, it wouldn’t be happening,” he says. “There’s no need for pressure. I feel like if it wasn’t my calling, I wouldn’t be here. It’s only pressure when it’s not meant for you.”
