Disco music has lost another one of its icons. Just three days after the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, passed away due to cancer, Robin Gibb died on Sunday [May 20] at the age of 62.

Like Summer, Gibb, one-third of the renowned group the Bee Gees, lost a long fight with cancer. According to TMZ, the London-born singer was diagnosed with colon and liver cancer two years ago. He was hospitalized with pneumonia last month.

His spokesperson released a statement that reads, “The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

As co-founder of the '70s band the Bee Gees, Gibb and his brothers, Barry and Maurice, rose to stardom during the disco era thanks to their seminal hits “Stayin’ Alive,” More Than a Woman” and “Night Fever,” all featured on the Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track, the album from the 1977 film starring John Travolta. Before Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the diamond-certified soundtrack was the top-selling album worldwide.

Several of the group's songs were sampled by hip hop and R&B stars, including Wyclef Jean, Jay-Z, R. Kelly and Snoop Dogg. The Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
