Jamaican Teen Accepted into 11 U.S Colleges, Offered 9 Scholarships
A 17-year-old Jamaican girl has joined the inspirational ranks of Black American teens Avery Coffey and Kwasi Enin after recently being accepted to several prestigious American universities.
Eleven schools, including Princeton, Duke, Yale and Stanford, have offered Tchakamau Mahakoe a spot in their freshman class. She also received scholarship offers from nine of the universities.
“I was just thinking that it’s a really good thing that I got accepted by so many," Mahakoe told the Jamaican Observer.
The college-bound said she was "pretty proud" of being accepted into her first choice—the University of Chicago—but was still unsure about which school she would attend in the fall. She intends to double major in physics and biology, with plans of possibly becoming an astronaut.
As a young girl, Mahakoe was home-schooled, along with her three siblings, before attending Immaculate Conception High School in St. Andrew and, later, the Hillel Academy in Kingston on a scholarship.
“Clearly, l’m ecstatic. I feel really good for her because she has been focused from the start,” the teen's mother, Kamau Mahakoe, told the Observer.
“She has never lost sight of her goals…you don’t have to push her…she uses her initiative.”
Earlier this month, Coffey and Enin also made national headlines after being accepted into five and eight Ivy League schools, respectively.
