7 Financial Lessons We Learned From Meek Mill's 'Dreams Worth More Than Money'
It’s been a long wait, but Meek Mill’s sophomore studio LP, Dreams Worth More Than Money, has finally arrived. The album brings the aggressive content for which our Philly protagonist is known, as he rides ratchet, trap-friendly instrumentals with his adrenalized flow. (It’s worth noting, though, that Meek has hearts eyes on songs like “Bad for You” and “All Eyes on You.” Thanks, Nicki Minaj.)
But as the title of Meek’s latest suggests, much of its content is focused on the almighty buck. The delicate art of effing up some commas. His lack of paper back when he aspirationally called himself Meek Millionaire. How to keep the envious ones at bay. Basically, money is on his mind, so fittingly he drops some street-educated gems. Here are seven financial messages gleaned from Dreams Money Can Buy.
1. Money can buy you many assets, but street cred has no price tag
Lyrics: “Money don't make it real/Don't give a f**k if its 80 mil, p***y/And just cause you got a Bentley/That Bentley won't make you thorough, p***y” (“Lord Knows”)
2. Find financial mentors and listen up
Lyrics: “Dedicated, de-terminated and disciplined/When Diddy, Hova, and Baby talking I'm listening” (“Cold Hearted”)
3. Money will make you a target
Lyrics: “And when you're gettin' to that money them people pursue you/The Feds lurkin', the streets watchin'/Them hoes talkin', like ‘he got it’” (“Stand Up”)
4. Don’t lose sight of life’s true treasure: family
Lyrics: "And yeah, I've been losin' touch with my family, it ain't the same/I should've gave my sister some money, but I made it rain/I should've hit the crib with my son and played a game/But instead I ended up at the jeweller to make a chain" (“The Trillest”)
5. Don’t chase women; keep your eyes on the dollars and they’ll follow
Lyrics: "We don’t chase b***hes, we chase money and that D'ussé/Cause when you get money, the hoes do whatever you say" (“Classic”)
6. Envy can turn even your closest comrades into snakes
Lyrics: “It's like the more money I made they got faker/And it's crazy when your best friend turn into your top hater/Wanna roll up and smoke you like top paper/Damn, what a feeling when you and your homie chilling and/You know he got thoughts of probably robbing and killing you" (“Cold Hearted”)
7. Even in 2015, the saying rings true: Mo’ money, mo’ problems. If money doesn’t change you, it’ll change those surrounding you, so be careful what you wish for.
Lyrics: “S**t, money's the root of all evil/Family start telling you ‘you acting different, n***a’/You're goddamn right I'm acting different/With all this motherf**king money/But then when it comes from your brother, your sister, your mother, your father/That s**t hurts you to the core, man/When they start acting like something that you ain't never motherf**king seen, you done grew up motherf**ker/They gave birth to you, know what I'm saying?/You got raised, you done played in the park with them/This money thing, this s**t will f**k you up man/You got to watch what you ask for/You sure you want this son?/You sure you want this money?/You sure you want this fame?/You sure you want this power?/S**t have your own mama talking to you like you ain't s**t (“Cold Hearted” (Diddy))
