Box Office: The SpongeBob Movie Soaks Up $56 Million
2015 seems to be all about surprise hits. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water took a huge bite out of the box office this weekend with $56 million in ticket sales. The family friendly film managed to knock American Sniper out of the top spot, putting the Oscar contender in second place with $24.2 million.
BEST MOMENTS FROM BLACK ROMANTIC COMEDIES
Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis' new flick Jupiter Ascending opened in the third spot with a disappointing $19 million, despite its $150 million budget. The film, which also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is the Wachowski's second major flop after the Halle Berry-starrer Cloud Atlas.
Rounding out the top five were Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore's Seventh Son and Paddington, starring Nicole Kidman, which earned $7.1 million and $5.4 million, respectively.
Project Almanac and another Oscar hopeful, The Imitation Game, came in sixth and seventh, followed by The Wedding Ringer, Black or White and The Boy Next Door, which each collected in the $4 million range.
Next week, Spike Lee's Da Sweet Blood of Jesus goes up against BDSM juggernaut Fifty Shades of Grey.
