Jordan Chiles Ordered to Return Olympic Bronze Medal

The U.S. appealed the court's decision and provided evidence in the gymnast’s favor.

On Sunday (Aug. 11), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Jordan Chiles's bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics will be given to her Romanian competitor, Ana Bărbosu.

This news comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided the inquiry that led her to jump from fifth place to third in last Monday’s (Aug. 5) game. According to CBS News, CAS ruled on Saturday (Aug. 10) that the appeal by U.S. coach Cecile Landi to have .1 added to Chiles' score that vaulted her into third place came outside the 1-minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

In its decision, CAS stated that the initial finishing order should be restored, meaning that Barbosu would replace Chiles as the bronze medalist. Her teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea would be fourth and Chiles to be fifth.

The U.S. is appealing that decision, and evidence was provided to CAS in an effort to have Chiles’ medal given back to her.

"We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed," the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said in a statement.
