A$AP Rocky Joins Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s Crime Thriller 'Highest 2 Lowest'
A$AP Rocky will return to acting in the upcoming Spike Lee-directed crime thriller "Highest 2 Lowest."
Filming began months ago, with early scenes showing Rocky emerging from a courthouse. In a new interview with Deadline, Lee confirmed that the Harlem rapper will play a "main role" in the film. Denzel Washington stars as the lead, marking his fifth collaboration with Lee, while Ice Spice also has a role in the project.
“People will see when it comes out,” Lee told Deadline during the 2024 Red Sea Film Festival. “But it’s dynamite.”
While Rocky finishes his long-awaited fourth album, Don’t Be Dumb, Highest 2 Lowest marks his fourth acting role. He previously starred in the 2015 comedy "Dope" and the 2018 crime drama "Monster" alongside John David Washington, Denzel’s son.
Lee described "Highest 2 Lowest" as a “reinterpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller "High and Low," which was loosely based on Ed McBain’s 1959 novel "King’s Ransom." The original film follows a shoe company executive who faces extortion after his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped. Initially, he believes his own son was abducted, forcing him to decide whether to save someone else’s child.
“In Kurosawa’s film, Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker,” Lee explained. “In our film, Denzel Washington is a music mogul with his own label and a reputation for having the best ears in the business. This is the fifth film with the dynamic duo.”
