Spike Lee Co-Signs Chi-Raq -Inspired Sex Strike
A Southside Chicago woman is calling for a vow of celibacy until the bloodshed in the city stops.
"In a patriarchal society, a problem will not be addressed until it directly affects men," April Lawson wrote in a Change.org petition.
She explains, she felt the urgency for the sex strike amid the deaths old 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee and 20-year-old Kaylan Pryor, especially.
"I want to preface this by saying I’m not usually in favor of using sex as a weapon in relationships," Lawson wrote. "Communication to me is paramount and I’d sooner opt for talking it over. But drastic times call for drastic measures."
She asks that her Chicagoan sisters join her in abstaining, and told ABC that she was moved after seeing a trailer for Spike Lee's Chi-Raq, which is based on a Greek play Lysistrata, and real-life events like the time women in Liberia helped end a civil war with a sex strike.
"GENTLEMEN, THE CANDY STORE IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED," she continued. "WE ARE ON STRIKE. PANTIES UP. SKIRTS DOWN. Let the lockdown begin..."
Ironically, as of press time, 69 supporters have signed the petition.
