Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal To Return To The Broadway Stage in “Othello”
Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, are returning to the Broadway stage.
Washington and Gyllenhaal are set to star in a revival of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Othello,” which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2025, Variety reports.
The “Equalizer” actor will play the title character, and Gyllenhaal will portray Iago, the antagonist, who tries to convince Othello about the unfaithfulness of his wife.
Kenny Leon, who directed this season’s “Purlie Victorious” and directed Washington in “A Raisin in the Sun,” will direct the production. Desdemona, Othello’s wife, has yet to be cast.
While it hasn’t been set in a theater, the production is sure to be one of the hottest tickets on Broadway.
Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner, who made his stage debut in “Checkmates” in 1998, has garnered critical acclaim for his roles on the Broadway stage. In 2018, he appeared in the revival of “The Iceman Cometh” and starred in August Wilson’s play “Fences” (he also directed the film adaptation of “Fences,” in 2016). In 2005, Washington also starred in “Julius Caesar” on Broadway.
Washington also starred in “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was released theatrically by A24 and Apple in 2021.
On the big screen, Washington will star in a new Netflix film centering on the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal the Conqueror. Frequent collaborator Antoine Fuqua is signed on to direct the forthcoming film.
Gyllenhaal, who earned a Tony nomination for the 2019 play “Sea Wall/ A Life,” also appeared on the Great White Way in productions of the Stephen Sondheim classic “Sunday in the Park With George” and “Constellation.”
In film, Gyllenhaal will star in the upcoming action thriller “Road House.”
