Denzel Washington to Lead in Epic Hannibal Biopic After SAG-AFTRA Strike
With the SAG-AFTRA strike now over, it's back to work for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington, who's set to star in a new Netflix movie focusing on the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal the Conqueror and marks the reunion of Washington and director Antoine Fuqua.
The yet-to-be-titled epic drama revolves around the renowned strategist Hannibal Barca, famed for his invasion of Rome while riding a war elephant from Northern Africa and key battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War (218-201 B.C.). Hannibal and his Carthaginian forces held sway over much of southern Italy for fifteen years before his defeat at the Battle of Zama against the Romans.

The script is being pinned by three-time Oscar nominee and “Gladiator's” John Logan. Fuqua and Washington will also produce alongside Erik Olsen and Adam Goldworm. The dup initially worked together in 2001 on the Oscar-winning movie “Training Day” and recently worked on the third installment of the action series, ”The Equalizer.”
Washington had reportedly had his eye on this project for over two decades, but FOX wanted to do it when the industry veteran did not want to be away from his kids for an extended period.
