Pennsylvania Superior Court Sides With District Attorney To Grant Meek Mill New Hearing For 2008 Conviction

He has a trial set for this summer.

The Pennsylvania Superior Court has sided with Meek Mill in his ongoing legal back-and-forth with Judge Genece Brinkley. On Monday (June 3), the Pennsylvania Superior Court granted Meek Mill a new hearing to fight his 2008 conviction, according to court documents obtained by NBC 10 Philadelphia.

  • The news comes two weeks after the Philadelphia district attorney’s office filed to have Brinkley removed from presiding over his case due to her apparent bias in legal proceedings. Now, Meek Mill’s 2008 gun charges will be retried before a new judge in Philadelphia.

  • The Championships rapper has continuously tried to get Brinkley recused from the case, but she refused to step down despite mounting public criticism over her rulings. In 2017, her jail sentence against the rapper was overturned by court orders and he was released in 2018. Following his release, Meek appealed for a retrial with a new judge, but Brinkley refused to grant him one, which led to the district attorney’s office stepping in.

  • “We’re looking forward to the oral argument before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and, hopefully, having Meek’s conviction vacated,” Jordan Siev, Mill’s lawyer, said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. “In light of the district attorney’s recent filing, where he supports the granting of a new trial to Meek and the recusal of Judge Brinkley, we hope to have this injustice rectified once and for all.”

  • The 32-year-old is pushing to have his conviction overturned after the credibility of the officer who testified against him came under scrutiny. Reginald Graham, the officer who arrested Meek and testified against him in 2007, was on an internal "Do Not Call" to testify memo. It was his testimony that put Meek behind bars the first time.

Meek Mill is expected to appear in court on July 16.
