Eminem Applauds Odd Future
As many critics have pointed out, there are more than a few similarities between the culturally subversive California rap crew Odd Future and Eminem, particularly in his early years. Both quickly became sensations in the media, both startled audiences with impressive rhymes that revealed disturbingly violent fantasies, and both even have the ignominious distinction of being denounced by GLAAD for the perceived homophobia of their lyrics.
Though OF, leader Tyler, the Creator, has cited Em as an inspiration and, until now, the Grammy-winning rap star hasn't gone on record with his thoughts on Tyler and his motley crew. In a new interview promoting his Bad Meets Evil project with Royce Da 5'9'', Eminem says that he's a fan.
“I think that from the stuff that I’ve heard—I haven’t heard a lot from them, I still have to go check out everything that they’re doing—but I’ve heard enough to know that it feels like they’re pushing boundaries and buttons, and that’s definitely one of the things that I’m familiar with, especially when I first came out," he told MTV's Sway.
Em made it clear that he, for one, appreciates the risks the controversial rap group is taking.
"I love it. I love the fact that they’re doing that. And the dudes can rhyme.”
Royce, who also took part in the interview, agreed with his friend and fellow Detroit native.
"I'm a big Frank Ocean fan," he said, referencing Odd Future's resident R&B crooner. "I like the whole group. I respect the movement."
The Bad Meets Evil EP, Hell: The Sequel is set to drop on June 14. Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" appear on the latest cover of Respect. magazine.
