For those who have been in denial regarding the recent tragic news that Prince is no longer with us, the fact that his videos are surfacing online is a sad confirmation.

The legendary artist spent a good chunk of his career fighting third-party sites, such as YouTube, working tirelessly and passionately to have the companies remove his copyrighted recordings that were posted without his approval. Prince fought very hard to keep his material exclusively available to fans through his own platforms, and even removed his music from Spotify, Pandora and Apple Music, granting Jay Z’s Tidal exclusivity in 2015. 

In a statement last year, Prince claimed that YouTube is “clearly able (to) filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content which is core to their business success.” He definitely had a valid point there.

A VEVO channel dedicated to Prince is bittersweet, knowing that he wouldn’t have approved of the curation if he had a say in the matter today. 

The page has videos available such as live performances and tributes recorded by fans, with the oldest on the site going live six days ago.
