Nia Long Tapped To Portray Katherine Jackson In Michael Jackson Biopic
Nia Long just scored a leading role in a new film that will tell the story of who some might call the greatest musician of all time.
Deadline reports that the "You People" actor will star in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael," and she will portray the singer's 93-year-old mom, Katherine Jackson. The film has also secured director Antoine Fuqua, who's known for his work on "The Equalizer" movie franchise and the acclaimed film, "Training Day."
“Nia has delivered iconic performances throughout her career. I’ve been a fan for a long time because her characters stay with you. I’m excited to now work alongside her as she pours all of that into Katherine Jackson: a woman who was the glue, the rock, and the heart of the Jackson family during its best and its most turbulent times.”
Long –whose career spans nearly 40 years and whose body of work includes “Boyz in the Hood,” “Friday,” and “The Best Man” franchise– is looking forward to bringing the Jackson Family matriarch's story to life.
“Katherine Jackson is an incredible pillar of strength and grace for the entire Jackson family. As a mother, she was selfless and endured forces beyond her control yet still managed to help build a legacy beyond measure. I am honored to bring her voice to the screen and share Michael Jackson’s story with audiences everywhere," said Long.
Last week, Colman Domingo –currently nominated for an Oscar for his work in "Rustin"– was cast in the film to play the famous family's patriarch, Joe Jackson.
Additionally, Jermaine Jasckson's son, Jaafar Jackson, will star in the film as the "Billy Jean" hitmaker.
"Michael," is slated to be released in theaters on April 18, 2024.
