This Day in Black History: June 8, 1968
Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye remain one of the most popular duos in popular music. On June 8, 1968, the two Motown singers' "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" reached the top of the Billboard R&B charts.
The song was the first single from their second album You're All I Need. Written by prolific songwriters Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson, it rose to the No. 1 spot in only three weeks of its release. It was also the first of two No. 1 R&B songs by Terrell and Gaye.
Ashford and Simpson also wrote and/or produced all but one of the duo's popular singles, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "You're All I Need to Get By."
