5.4. Magnitude Earthquake HIts Jamaica, Causing Alarm Around Island
Jamaica was hit with a 5.4 magnitude on Monday (October 30) that caused panic throughout the country as people fled for safety, CBS Miami reports.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred about 2 miles west-northwest of Hope Bay at a shallow depth of 6 miles.
The earthquake hit the U.N.'s International Seabed Authority that was on Monday. After everyone was safe, it was decided to postpone the session.
"We need some time to adjust emotionally," said Elza Moreira Marcelino de Castro, who represented Brazil at the meeting.
An anonymous journalist was on camera when he felt the reverberations of the earthquake and shared his experience in an interview.
"We're having an earthquake," he said while the lights flickered.
"Oh, God," he said as he sought shelter under a desk.
Following the unexpected incident, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that no deaths, injuries, or severe damage had been reported as a result of the quake.
“Damage has been minor, but nevertheless, we are taking all precautions,” Holnes said in a message online. “I want to say to all Jamaicans, remain calm.”
The prime minister implored the people to find shelter and safety saying that many areas are without electricity and phone service because of the earthquake.
“We give God thanks for sparing us the worst,” Holness said.
Although Jamaica experiences around 200 small earthquakes a year, big earthquakes are extremely rare in the Caribbean nation.
The reported earthquake in April reached the 4.6 magnitude level when it struck the country.
