Greg 'Tarzan' Davis on Transitioning from Social Media Star to Starring in Two Tom Cruise Films
In the dynamic tapestry of the 21st century, a transformative synergy between social media and the film industry has emerged as a game changer in the entertainment world. The digital epoch has unrolled a platform for blossoming talents, tethering them to a global stage. Amidst the newcomers, Greg 'Tarzan' Davis shines brightly, having catapulted from viral social media fame to the glamorous realms of Hollywood, sharing the spotlight with industry legend Tom Cruise in two blockbuster hits.
Unleashing high-energy, comedic content, Davis shook up social media and swiftly seized the digital world's attention with his Instagram series Living With Jane.
Hollywood, recognizing the organic and extensive appeal of Davis, turned its gaze toward him. Producers and casting directors were captivated by his charismatic persona and athletic capabilities, earmarking him for action-packed roles. Before long, he shared the marquee with the legendary Tom Cruise in two films.
“I got to see what Hollywood was like on a smaller scale of interacting with people entertained by your work,” Davis shared about his ascend from social media to Hollywood. “It has helped me understand how people react to you when they enjoy something you've done.”
Davis' big breakthrough arrived in 2021 when he starred in eleven episodes of Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Jordan Wright. Yet, it was his big screen debut in Tom Cruise’s 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, where audiences witnessed a new dimension of Davis, portraying the audacious pilot Lt. Javy 'Coyote' Machado.
Few up-and-coming actors can claim they’ve starred in not just one but two Cruise movies. Davis now has those bragging rights. On July 12, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, already receiving a certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, is set to debut worldwide. This allows Davis to showcase his acting and stunt capabilities in what could potentially be this summer's blockbuster hit.
“I think ever since I started working with Tom, my life has gotten a little bit crazier. I'm a pilot. Now I ride motorcycles, skydive down, bungee jump, and I do a lot of exciting things. And Tom is very infectious regarding doing this stuff,” Davis shared about his second stint with Cruise.
In this latest Mission: Impossible chapter, Davis brings to life Degas, one of the agents who pursues Ethan Hunt. Having worked twice with Cruise, Davis now regards him as a mentor and a friend. With Cruise's decades of experience, he's shared valuable guidance with Davis.
“The biggest advice that he's ever given me is that whatever happens to you is because of you, whether good or bad; take control of your life because your decisions will shape the future. If something bad happens, you can correct it. And if something good happens, you can continue to produce the results that created something positive,” Davis revealed.
As cinephiles swarm theaters this week to experience the action-packed film, they will surely recognize Davis's immense talent. And who knows, we may soon see him in another Tom Cruise movie.
